Lanterns in the Mist
One of the five most notorious prisoners of Harrowstone.
“You are hereby sentenced to live the remainder of your short life in Harrowstone, which, I hasten to add, is a blessing compared to the extent of your crimes and the suffering of your victims. There you will reside in the misery of your thoughts until such time as you are drawn, hanged, and quartered. May the gods have no mercy on your blighted soul.”
—The final sentencing of Vance Saetressle aka “The Lopper” in 708 by Jurisdeclaris Axenris the Third.
Vance Saetressle , more widely known for his crimes as The Lopper, was a particularly violent serial killer. When the Lopper stalked prey, he would hide in the most unlikely of places, sometimes for days upon end with only a few supplies to keep himself fed while he waited for the exact right moment to strike. Once his target was alone, the Lopper would emerge to savagely behead his victim with a axe.
The Lopper was incarcerated in Harrowstone prison near Ravengro, in Canterwall county, Ustalav. Although slated for a quick and gruesome execution, a number of bureaucratic complications kept pushing back his expected date of execution. The prison’s warden Lyvar Hawkran, unable to proceed with what he felt was a simple judgment, instead ordered the Lopper confined to an oubliette in the lower dungeon of the prison. It was Gurtis Vortch, captain of the guards, who elected to break Vance’s knees on the rack before dropping him into the pit. With both of his legs broken, the Lopper malingered in the depths for months before the riot within Harrowstone broke out. Though granted a chance at freedom in the early hours of the riots on July 21st 708, the fire would ultimately lead to his demise as well.
